John is a highly respected figure in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. He has served on many of the industry’s leading bodies including spells as President of the Institute of Refrigeration and Chairman of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Board. He has been heavily involved in the development of a number of National Certification Schemes for the City and Guilds and in July 1992 was appointed an Honorary Member. In 2008 he won the coveted RAC Gold Award for his campaigning on the standards for refrigerant handling including his contribution towards the setting up of the F Gas qualification. In addition to his training in the UK John was a key player with the UN industrial development organisation; travelling the world training trainers, so that developing countries had the relevant standards from which to train their own skilled workforce.
John’s first experience in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry was during his time in the Corps of Royal Engineers where he started out as a refrigeration mechanic and combat engineer. He became an instructor in the army and later became a lecturer at Willesden College of Technology moving his way up to Principal Lecturer and Head of School. Following a stint in private industry he established Ellis Training Works in 1991 initially offering peripatetic training to companies.
